Design Process:

Our studio specialises in creative conceptual thinking, light analysis, detailing and integration, equipment specification, technical documentation, control systems, project co-ordination and delivery. We carefully tailor our professional design services on an individual project basis depending on the need, complexity and client brief / requirements.

Collaboration and strong communication flows through all of our work stages and is key to a successful outcome; whether that be the forming of a tight and logical brief with the Client, developing a specific detail with the Architect, or focussing a spotlight with an Electrical Contractor on site.   Consistent, clear communication with all stakeholders is fundamental to our practice philosophy and design process.

  • At the commencement of a project we discuss the aspirations, constraints and targets with the Client and collectively form a lighting brief. This can often be very simple, though it can also be notably specific and refined, dependent on the type of project in question. In any case the lighting brief forms an agreed principle direction to which we can all follow and refer back to throughout the design process.

  • After reviewing the project brief and additional information available to us, we begin to conceptualise the lighting design for the project and generate ideas, themes and suitable approaches. This work usually takes the form of sketches, models, testing and various presentation techniques. During this stage, lighting equipment costs are assessed to ensure the project remains on budget, whilst we also pay due attention to construction practicalities, future maintenance issues and the sustainability of the proposed design.

  • A phase of more refined design development and technical production is reached post obtaining an agreed lighting concept with the Client and Design Team. Concept ideas are turned into sketch details and layout drawings, together with schedules of information regarding equipment and lighting control. Further lighting tests and mock-ups are carried out if necessary in order to clarify and demonstrate the effects proposed.

  • This stage involves the formalising of the agreed lighting design proposals, taking the form of detailed technical drawings, general arrangements, equipment and control specifications and schedules. We also assist with the completion of assessment models such as BREEAM, LEED, etc. Once packaged and signed off, our lighting design information is then incorporated into the Construction Documentation by others.

  • Once the design documentation stage is complete, we carefully support the construction phase of the project. We assist with the awarding of contracts, review contractor drawings and proposals, answer RFI’s, ensure specifications are met and generally assist with the co-ordination of the lighting installation in this key phase.

  • Once installed, we provide the Client with detailed defects and snagging reports to ensure the technical design packaged is delivered as promised. We also direct the focussing, programming and scene-setting of all lighting equipment and control systems installed, and ensure the Client team is fully trained on all systems installed.
